The yew is not only a very robust tree in terms of climate and location. It also doesn't cause any problems when cutting. In principle, it is not necessary to cut a yew tree. Pruning is done to rejuvenate the tree or to close a bare hedge. When is the best time to cut?

Yew can be cut into shape at any time

The best time to cut the yew

You can cut the yew all year round. It doesn't matter whether you just make a shape cut or cut the tree back to the stalk.

However, the yew will get brown needles at the cuts if you cut them directly in the sun at high heat. This is not dangerous for the tree, but spoils the appearance.

If you want the yew to flower and bear fruit later, cut off the female trees in the spring before new growth begins. Otherwise, remove later inflorescences. Male trees start inflorescences in autumn and should therefore only be trimmed until late summer.

Protect hands and face

The yew contains the highly toxic taxine in all parts of the plant except for the pulp. Although it is only life-threatening if ingested orally, the plant sap can cause inflammatory skin reactions. Therefore, protect your bare skin when cutting so that the sap does not get on your face, hands, arms or legs.

tips

Yews can be easily propagated by cuttings. All you have to do is cut shoots 15 to 20 cm long, which you then put in the bucket or at the desired outdoor location in the ground.
