When planting a tree, however, it is important not only to keep an eye on the calendar: sudden cold snaps in autumn or a heat wave in spring can make it necessary to postpone the project. Basically, planting should be done on a day with mild weather and a cloudy sky.

In principle, trees grown in containers can be planted all year round, as they are not affected by a planting shock to the same extent as root-balled or bare-rooted trees. Only when the ground is frozen, planting is not possible. Bare-rooted trees, on the other hand, should preferably be planted outside of the growing season.

Basically, deciduous trees are planted during the winter dormant phase, which begins when the leaves fall and lasts until around April. Autumn planting is preferable if possible, provided it is a hardy tree species. More sensitive shrubs, on the other hand, are not planted until spring.

However, evergreen deciduous trees come into the garden much earlier. Here, the ideal planting time is between the end of August and the end of October, provided it is not too hot and dry. Planting in winter or spring is also possible, provided the temperatures are more than minus five degrees Celsius.

It is best to plant conifers between the beginning of September and the end of October and from the beginning of March to the end of April. Planting in spring is usually preferable to avoid frost and drought damage.
