Around the end of February / beginning of March - depending on the weather - spring begins in the garden. Now it's time for the gardener to lend a hand, trees and other perennial plants have to be prepared for the new season. Also, now is the time to plant some trees and shrubs.

Trees can be planted in spring

Many trees are planted in spring

In particular, deciduous trees that are sensitive to frost and those grown in containers should not be planted in autumn but in spring if possible. The best time to do this is before the tree has started sprouting. Mix the excavation from the planting hole with plenty of compost and horn shavings (€32.93), then the little tree will immediately receive the right nutrients for healthy rooting. Frost-sensitive trees such as magnolias, on the other hand, should only be planted when the last late frosts are over. They then have enough time until the next winter to grow and to arm themselves against the cold season. Bare-root trees, on the other hand, are in the vegetation break, and coniferous trees are even planted in September.

When planting, don't forget to cut the plants!

In the course of planting, roots are crushed or torn off. For this reason, a pruning is essential and must not be forgotten. To do this, remove weak and damaged branches, and shorten the remaining ones by about a third. This rule does not apply to shrubs that naturally develop with few, thick branches or continue to grow from strongly developed terminal buds. Accordingly, magnolias, horse chestnuts and rowanberries do not require pruning. Otherwise, depending on the type and variety, trees should be pruned in autumn or winter if possible.

The best care for a good budding

Trees already in the garden receive an extra portion of fertilizer in the form of compost and horn shavings in March so that they sprout healthy and strengthened. You should also cut away dead, diseased or broken wood, as this provides an entry point for fungal spores (and other pathogens), which are now more active again. Pay attention to hygiene when cutting and disinfect the tools with a suitable agent, which you can buy in the pharmacy or in the garden shop. Diseases and pests are often transmitted from one plant to another through contaminated cutting tools.

tips

Trees cultivated in pots should be cleared out of their winter quarters as early as possible, but they still need protection from night frosts.
