Always a portion of fresh greens to nibble on? This is not only good for rabbits and co, but also for you. The dandelion is an easy-to-grow plant that is tasty and rich in nutrients. How do you breed them?

Why balcony boxes are not suitable for growing
Anyone who comes up with the idea of simply scattering dandelion seeds in the balcony box should not be surprised if nothing comes of breeding. The plants will probably sprout, but will soon die. The reason: The dandelion needs a deep underground. It forms a long and strong taproot.
You should therefore rather plant or sow the dandelion in a deep pot - or directly outdoors, for example in the front garden or in front of the terrace. If you choose a pot, it should be at least 10 cm in diameter and at least 25 cm deep.
Which location does the dandelion need?
A suitable location is required for successful breeding. Dandelions don't grow in the shade. The weed needs a sunny to, at worst, semi-shady location in order to be able to grow well. It does not value a sheltered location - it is quite robust.
Grow the plant from seed
Digging up a plant from the wild and putting it in a pot at home is not recommended. Sowing the dandelion is easier. All you need to do is collect a few of the seeds. The seeds can be sown from March to August.
That is how it goes:
- fill a small pot with seed compost
- Sow seeds 1 to 2 cm deep
- press
- keep moist
- put in a warm place
- Seedlings appear after 4 weeks
- repot after 8 weeks
New plants every year - without any action
One dandelion plant is no longer enough to satisfy your appetite or that of your pets? Do not worry. If you give the plant a chance to set its seeds, it will self-sow given enough space.
tips
Planting the dandelion outdoors should be well thought out. Once established and not stopped in bloom, dandelions spread rapidly and can soon become a nuisance.
