Once you've come to appreciate your giant allium, you might want to have more of these ornamental plants in your garden. Of course you can buy them, but it is much nicer to grow the giant leek yourself.

What methods of propagation are there for giant leeks?
Allium giganteum, the giant leek, can be propagated by dividing the bulbs or separating daughter bulbs, or by sowing. Both methods are easy to implement and crowned with success in most cases.
Where can I get the seeds from?
Of course, you can also buy various seeds for giant leeks in stores, but if you have your own giant leeks, then simply use the seeds. To do this, leave the withered inflorescences until the seeds inside have turned black. Now they are ready to be harvested and sowed quickly. Only store the seeds for a short time, but then dry and dark.
Sow the giant leek
Before the seeds of your giant leek can germinate, they need a certain period of cold weather because they are so-called cold germs. Temperatures should be around freezing for at least a few days, if necessary in the freezer or in the refrigerator.
Sow your giant leeks outdoors immediately after harvest, and the seeds will germinate next spring. Cultivation on the window sill after previous cooling is also possible. Keep the seeds evenly moist.
Propagation by onion bulbs
The giant leek practically does the propagation by onions on its own. In addition to the main onion, small daughter onions or brood onions grow over the years. If these are developed far enough, then they can be transplanted. The best time to dig up your scallions is in the fall. Separate the largest daughter bulbs and put them back in the ground at a suitable location.
The essentials in brief:
- Propagation possible by seed and bulbs
- Only harvest seeds when they have turned black
- sow immediately after harvest
- if storage is necessary: dark and dry
- Mix potting soil with quartz sand (15.85€).
- cold germinator
- Keep substrate and seeds moist
- Plant bulbs in autumn
- Avoid waterlogging!

The giant leek is quite easy to propagate and even takes on this task itself by forming daughter bulbs.
