There are countless variants of raised beds - made of wood, stone, metal, plastic, round, square, oval, for vegetables, herbs or flowers, with or without a greenhouse attachment… they all have in common that they offer various advantages over a conventional garden bed. But the disadvantages of a raised bed should not be concealed at this point either: What do you just plant in there? After all, there are so many exciting variants.

A raised bed is a comfortable height for working

Benefits of Raised Compost Beds

In particular, the classic compost raised bed offers a lot of advantages, especially for the cultivation of useful plants. The filling, which decomposes over time, contains many valuable nutrients, which is why the bed does not have to be fertilized for years. Instead, depending on its age and nutrient composition (this decreases over the years), you can plant it with heavy, medium and weak consumers. In addition, a compost raised bed develops a lot of heat inside due to the rotting process, which many vegetables like very much - and is one of the reasons why compost raised beds extend the vegetation period by a few weeks.

Composition of the plant substrate

However, a compost raised bed cannot be installed in every case. It is not advisable to do this on a balcony or on a table bed, for example. Nevertheless, a raised bed can be of good service on many occasions, for example if you want to garden on a balcony or terrace. In any case, you can individually adapt the composition of the plant substrate to the planned planting - after all, tomatoes need different soil than rock garden plants or brightly blooming summer flowers.

Gardening even on small and unsuitable planting areas

In general, a raised bed enables gardening even where, due to the soil conditions, the planting of vegetables or ornamental plants is not possible at all or only to a very limited extent. This applies, for example, to inner courtyards or front gardens that are paved or otherwise paved, to balconies, terraces, but also to gardens on slopes or with very unsuitable (because, for example, very heavy) floors.

Structuring and design of the garden

In addition, both large and small gardens can be wonderfully structured with the different types of raised beds. For example, you can terrace gardens on a slope using stone raised beds and thus make them usable in the first place. Several raised beds are also ideal for protecting a terrace or a secluded corner in the garden from prying eyes with the right plants. Furthermore, through the skilful use of raised beds, veritable garden spaces can be designed and separated from one another.

Comfortable working height

The comfortable, back-friendly working height is of course one of the most important reasons for purchasing a raised bed. You no longer have to bend down or laboriously slide through the garden on your knees to tend the bed, you can work standing up or sitting down.

tips

Incidentally, you do not necessarily have to spend a lot of money buying the materials required for building a raised bed at a hardware store. Instead, materials of all kinds that are lying around anyway can be used for this purpose. This not only saves you money, but also reduces the mountains of rubbish.
