When the lawnmower sputters and stutters, the engine is dealing with a problem that is throwing its RPMs out of sync. Read here what is often the cause behind it. This has to be done to make your petrol mower purr like a kitten again.

If the carburetor is dirty, the lawn mower starts to stutter

Dirty carburetor makes the engine stutter

A dirty carburetor is the most common cause of a stalling lawnmower. Constant contact with dirt, grass, leaves and twigs causes deposits in the engine, causing it to run rough. By prescribing a general cleaning of the carburetor, you bring the fluctuating engine speeds back into balance. Proceed as follows, step by step:

  • Close the fuel tap or empty the tank
  • Remove the carburetor, air filter and spark plug following the instructions in the manual
  • Replace worn seals with new ones
  • Pour benzine into a tub and place the removed carburettor in it
  • Clean air filter and spark plug

Soak the carburetor in the white spirit for about 60 minutes. Wipe the module dry with a cloth and install it. The clean air filter and cleaned spark plug also take their place. Reconnect the connector and spark plug, fill the tank with petrol or open the petrol tap.

Readjust the carburetor on the petrol mower - a short guide

After a thorough cleaning, a carburetor needs to be readjusted to keep the lawnmower running smoothly. With all components back in place, start the engine. At idle, adjust the settings in a screwdriver. Most commercial petrol mowers have two adjustment screws for regulating engine speed and fuel quantity. How to proceed:

  • Screw in the adjusting screw for the speed a little
  • The engine speed increases in response
  • Adjust the fuel adjusting screw until the engine runs smoothly

The brief increase in engine speed is fine-tuned in the last step. To do this, unscrew the adjusting screw a little until you are completely satisfied with the running mower.

tips

Gasoline lawn mowers have a weak point that can cause the engine to stutter even in the most modern models. Always tilt your lawn mower sideways with the spark plug and air filter facing up. Otherwise leaking oil and petrol can clog the important components.
