- Low petrol levels make lawn mowers powerless
- When the spark plug burns out, the engine runs out of steam
If a lawn mower keeps stopping, it does not necessarily have to be a serious technical defect. There are usually two causes for the problem that you can solve yourself. This guide explains what to do if a lawnmower keeps cutting out.

Low petrol levels make lawn mowers powerless
If your lawn mower constantly refuses to work, first take a look in the fuel tank. If there is only a small amount of petrol left, the mower will stop at every bump in the road. The liquid sloshes back and forth in the tank, so when the level is low, air gets into the fuel line and the engine stalls. After you add new petrol, the lawn mower runs without interruption.
Old gasoline kills the engine
Does the engine fail when you mow the lawn for the first time after the winter break? Then the fuel is too old. Without preservatives, the fuel degrades over the long break and can lead to gumming in the component system. Drain the old petrol and fill in fresh fuel.
When the spark plug burns out, the engine runs out of steam
When a lawn mower stutters and gets on your nerves with dropouts, burned spark plugs are one of the most common causes. If there is enough fuel in the tank, subject the spark plug to a thorough inspection. How to do it right:
- Turn off the unwilling lawn mower and put it in the shade to cool off
- Pull the connector off the spark plug
- Take a spark plug wrench and unscrew the spark plug
The condition of the spark plug and contacts determines how to proceed. Please replace a badly burned out, deep black sooted candle. This also applies if cracks have formed in the porcelain. In all other cases, clean the spark plug and contacts with a brush and cloth without using water or liquid cleaner. Screw the spark plug back in, put the plug on it and continue mowing.
tips
Does your lawn mower stall even though the fuel and spark plugs are ok? Then the carburetor is targeted as the culprit. Take the instruction manual to hand. Here you can read how to clean and reset the carburetor yourself.
