A regularly cleaned lawn mower lasts longer, does not smoke and starts reliably. Just a few simple steps are enough to significantly reduce emissions and fuel consumption. This guide explains how easy it is to take care of your mower to keep it in top condition.

A dirty lawnmower doesn't run well

Regular cleaning keeps the lawnmower fit - tips & tricks

After each mowing, dirt and grass clippings stick to the lawnmower. If regular cleaning is not carried out, a drastic reduction in performance and high wear of critical engine components are inevitable. A few simple steps prevent this shortcoming. How to properly clean your lawnmower:

  • First pull the spark plug connector
  • Tilt the mower backwards or sideways
  • Remove all grass clippings from the cutter bar with the water hose or a brush

Clean the housing of a lawnmower with a cloth or brush. Unlike the cutting unit, the cutting deck should not be sprayed with water. The risk of the technology being damaged by the concentrated load of moisture is too great.

Farewell to dirt particles - clean spark plugs work better

Only a clean spark plug produces a strong ignition spark. Therefore, check the condition of the spark plug carefully every time you clean the lawnmower. Fortunately, these are the engine parts that are particularly easy to clean. How to do it:

  • Disconnect spark plug wire
  • Unscrew the spark plug with a suitable spark plug wrench
  • Remove coarse dirt with a brush
  • Apply a spark plug cleaner spray and let it soak
  • Rub off remaining dirt particles with a cloth

It is important to note that you do not use abrasives or a blast machine to remove stubborn dirt. Use the key to screw in the cleaned spark plug and make the cable connection. If you find burnt electrodes or cracks in the porcelain during cleaning, please replace the spark plug with a new one.

Clean air filter for a clean engine - this is how cleaning works

Most manufacturers recommend replacing the air filter at intervals of 25 hours of operation. The filters may already be heavily soiled before this point in time, so that dirt and dust penetrate to the carburettor or the engine. You should therefore supplement the regular cleaning of the mower deck and cutting unit with a brief cleaning of the air filter. How to do it right:

  • Remove and disassemble air filter according to manufacturer's instructions
  • Tap paper filter elements clean and reinsert
  • Replace heavily soiled paper filters

If it is a foam filter, you can clean it with hot water and a few dashes of dishwashing liquid. Then wrap the filter in a dry cloth and wring it out. Once the component has dried, reinsert it.

tips

Cleaning your lawn mower is a good opportunity to check the oil level. In very dusty or wet conditions, more oil will be consumed and should be refilled in time. So make it a habit to check the oil level before or after you clean your lawnmower.
