The fascinating world of Asian garden art opens up to you with the quartet of gravel, sand, moss and trees. Gravel, sand, stones and moss are quickly integrated into the authentic Zen garden. This selection introduces you to beautiful plants that you can use to round off the design plan creatively and in line with the concept.

The Japanese maple must not be missing in the Zen garden

These trees are desirable in the Zen garden

The strict rules for a genuine Zen garden only accept miniature trees. How good that some of the most beautiful Asian ornamental trees are suitable for cultivation as bonsai:

  • Evergreen: Japanese white pine (Pinus parviflora) or Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata)
  • Deciduous with magnificent autumn colors: Japanese maple (Acer palmatum)
  • Flowering shrubs: Japanese carnation (Prunus serrulata), Japanese quince (Chaenomeles japonica)

In principle, all Asian bonsai species conform to this garden form, while at the same time they should have reliable winter hardiness. Therefore, boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) is also highly valued for the true-to-original design of a Japanese rock garden.

Allowed break in style from the plant kingdom for more individuality

Plant variations spill over from the classic Japanese garden design into the Zen garden, which are tolerated as a permissible break in style. With the following types and varieties you can give your Kare-san-sui garden a pinch of individuality:

  • Ornamental grasses: non-stoloniferous bamboo (Fargesia murielae) or diamond grass (Calamagrostis brachytricha)
  • Flowering shrubs: rhododendrons, e.g. B. white-flowered 'Cunningham's White' or red-flowered 'Erato'
  • Succulents: Cypress Spurge (Euphorbia cyparissias) or Plum Stonecrop (Sedum cauticola)
  • As a stylish substitute for moss: star moss, pearlwort (Sagina subulata)

Use only a few of these plants, which you embed widely scattered in the garden design. If you use the stone element in the form of a small dry wall, typical plants for greening are welcome here. These include sun worshipers such as Wall Alyssum (Alyssum) or Golden Sheaf (Achillea filipendulina). In partially shaded locations, dwarf lady's mantle (Alchemilla faeroensis var. pumila) and gold droplets (Chiastophyllum oppositifolium) come into their own.

tips

The Zen garden concept is perfect for creating a low-maintenance front yard. So that nasty weeds don't thwart your plans, please first lay a stable weed fleece (€21.70) with a thickness of at least 120 g/m².
