A raised bed is an upgrade for the garden for many reasons. Be it because the gardener would rather garden in a way that is easy on the back or because such a raised bed visually divides the garden into different areas, because the garden soil is not suitable for planting or the garden area is on a steep slope. Raised beds can be made of many materials and can be beautifully beautified with various tricks - for example with an attractive paneling.

Concrete is cheap and strong

Concrete - versatile, cheap, durable and boring

The material concrete offers a whole range of advantages that make it ideal for building a raised bed. Concrete is often very cheap to buy, extremely robust and durable and versatile. In contrast to the traditional raised beds made of wood, which often rot within a few years due to the high humidity. However, concrete also has a disadvantage: It can look extremely boring and ugly, so that a raised bed made of it does not necessarily mutate into a feast for the eyes. However, this can easily be avoided.

Beautify raised beds made of concrete with cladding

All you have to do is cover the concrete raised bed with another, more visually appealing material. A formwork made of wooden slats or planks is suitable for this, for example, with which you kill two birds with one stone: the unsightly concrete disappears behind the wood, while this is protected from moisture by the stone border and cannot rot so quickly. However, there are other ways to dress up a raised bed:

  • instead of wooden slats, use hazelnut sticks
  • braided willow branches
  • a dry stone wall
  • covering the concrete with tiles or mosaic stones
  • Planting directly in front of the raised bed, for example with perennials or shrubs

If you want to make the raised bed border disappear by transplanting, make sure that the plants do not grow higher than the raised bed itself - otherwise the plants growing on it could soon suffer from a lack of light.

More ways to enhance the look of raised beds

Instead of disguising the unsightly raised bed, you can beautify it in other ways: all you have to do is grab a brush and a suitable color and paint the bed. In this way, the light gray shaft ring becomes a motley work of art in no time at all, the colors of which compete with the flowers in the garden.

tips

However, not only unsightly raised beds have to be clad on the outside, you also need a cladding on the inside: foil or waterproof fleece in particular protect wooden beds from penetrating moisture and thus from decay.
