If a tree in the garden has to be felled, the tree stump and tree roots should remain in the ground. The removal is laborious and requires a lot of strength and is not exactly cheap. The tree roots die off by themselves, even if it takes time. This will speed up the death of tree roots.

If the tree stump is sawn, it rots faster

It takes a long time for tree roots to die

Many years can pass before all the tree roots of a tree have died. During this time, the space in the garden can only be used to a limited extent. Still, you should leave tree roots in place because they release important nutrients as they decompose.

However, the dying of the tree roots can be accelerated somewhat. With the right tips, they will rot after just two to three years.

Always dispose of new shoots immediately

Immediately after felling, the tree roots are not yet dead. This can lead to new shoots developing next to the tree stump. Always remove these new growths before they become too thick and make removal unnecessarily difficult.

Cause tree roots to die faster

There are chemicals that you can use to quickly kill the tree roots. In the interest of the environment and garden health, however, you should avoid using such agents. Microorganisms in the soil are damaged as well as insects that ensure a healthy garden.

In order to make the tree roots die faster, it is better to use largely natural measures:

  • sawing roots
  • drill holes
  • fill with compost
  • Fill in calcium cyanamide (Wurzel-Ex).

Kill tree roots with a saw and compost

Saw the roots in a checkerboard pattern with a saw. Drill several holes in the wood with a wood drill bit. In this way you supply the microorganisms with some oxygen. Fill the holes with semi-mature or mature compost mixed with accelerator and starter.

Calcium cyanamide, which is also contained in Root-Ex, supplies the microorganisms with nutrients so that they work faster and the tree roots die off more quickly.

tips

A tree stump in the garden can be used in many ways. Simply set up a bird bath or attach a bird feeder to it in winter. This not only looks decorative, but also ensures that the animal garden dwellers feel comfortable.
