A raised bed is not only suitable for growing vegetables at a comfortable working height and cultivating pretty perennials - instead you simply kill two birds with one stone and create a secluded, cozy corner with the help of a raised bed and suitable plants.

Plants that would otherwise be too low can be used as privacy screens in raised beds

Deny prying eyes with a raised bed

With a raised bed, you can also stop prying eyes with plants that are too low in a normal bed. No matter how elegantly, beautifully or comfortably furnished a seat is - if you don't have a border to protect you from onlookers, you don't feel safe.

Which plants are suitable as privacy screens in raised beds?

At the seating area, tall herbs such as lavender, rosemary, hyssop, sage and oregano are ideal for planting in the raised bed. Not only do they smell aromatic, they can also be used to season in the kitchen. Also suitable are perennials with a long flowering period, for example the Indian nettle (Monarda) or tall, upright grasses such as the garden reed grass or the small zebra reed.

Screening with fruit trees

Fruit trees - berry bushes and small fruit trees - can also be cultivated as privacy screens in raised beds. Suitable species are above all currants, gooseberries, mayberries and cultivated blueberries. If you want raspberries to grow on the raised bed, you should attach a post to each of the two narrow sides of the bed and pull some tension wires between them. You tie the long raspberry rods to this. Trellis fruit planted in rows (e.g. ballerina apple trees) are also very suitable.

Use high walls to build raised beds

Wherever a wall is desired or necessary, you can convert it into an easy-care raised bed with a second one placed in front of it. High walls no longer look too massive, and you can also use the heat-storing effect of the stones for the plants. Even compact screen walls made of gabions or wooden sleepers can be loosened up in this way. The same applies to high, bare walls of residential buildings and outbuildings. You don't always have enough sun there for useful plants, but many climbing and ornamental plants also feel at home in raised beds. Raised beds are particularly suitable for creating more green spaces in sealed courtyards and on paved areas.

tips

If perennial plants are to grow on the raised bed, the layers in the bed must be created accordingly. Unlike raised vegetable beds, you first fill in a drainage layer of gravel and place a garden fleece over it. On top of that comes a mixture of topsoil and compost as a substrate.
