Cymbidium orchids produce particularly beautiful flowers - if they are properly cared for and given a favorable location. If a cymbidium does not bloom, too high temperatures are responsible. How to get the orchid to bloom.

The Cymbidium needs certain temperatures to bloom

Why isn't the Cymbidium flowering?

Cymbidium forms its flowering shoots in autumn and winter. The orchid then blooms for several weeks.

However, it can only develop the flowering shoots if you create conditions at the location that are similar to those at the orchid's place of origin. It is significantly colder there at night than during the day and the humidity is sufficiently high.

The reason why a cymbidium does not bloom is that the orchid in this country is kept at the same temperature day and night. However, larger temperature differences are absolutely necessary so that the plant can form flowers. Since the Cymbidium is not hardy, you cannot simply leave the orchid outside to allow for a natural temperature change.

The right location with suitable temperatures

  • Temperature differences from late summer
  • 20 degrees during the day
  • 12 degrees at night
  • sufficiently high humidity

To ensure ideal temperatures at the site, start lowering the nighttime temperatures in late summer. During the day they can be around 20 degrees, at night it shouldn't get warmer than 12 degrees.

Since orchids generally don't like being moved often, you should look for a place where there are different day and night temperatures. This is usually very difficult to achieve in the living room. A favorable place is therefore a conservatory or greenhouse that is not heated, at least at night.

In addition, the humidity at the location must be above 60 percent if possible. If necessary, place bowls of water near the cymbidium. By increasing the humidity, you also prevent infestation by pests.

Formation of the inflorescence

Once the Cymbidium has developed a flowering shoot, the temperature changes between day and night are no longer necessary. However, the orchid should not be kept too warm.

Above all, avoid direct sunlight.

tips

A cymbidium is relatively easy to propagate by dividing. However, the plant must be big enough for this so that it is not weakened too much.
