Space is usually quite limited on a balcony. If you still want to grow something, a vertical garden can be the ideal solution. Below you will find beautiful ideas for building your own vertical garden on the balcony and terrace.

Vertical garden for the balcony wall: ideas
A vertical garden on the balcony must be tight at the bottom and back and should be able to be hung. There are several options that you can either get from a specialist retailer or make yourself:
plant bags
Plant bags are a good solution for the balcony wall. You can get simple plant bags for hanging on the wall with three subdivisions in a pack of two for €15.90. The top two levels of the plant bags have drainage so that the water flows into the bottom one. With open balconies that sometimes get rain, you should therefore place water-resistant plants in the lower area.
bottles on the wall
This inexpensive upcycling option is only suitable for covered balconies where the vertical garden does not get rain.
- Collect the largest possible PVC bottles with lids(!).
- Place the bottle horizontally on the table in front of you and fix it.
- Saw multiple openings or a single large opening using a Flex.
- Screw the cap on and fill the bottle with soil.
- Edit other bottles in the same way.
- Put plants in the bottles. Mix in bushy plants with climbing and hanging ones whose twigs and branches you can direct as you wish.
- Fasten the bottles horizontally, one above the other, side by side on the wall using screws or nails. Alternatively, you can also attach narrow shelves.
- Space them as close together as possible to give the impression of a green wall.
Herbs and vegetables on the balcony
Instead of ornamental plants, you can also grow vegetables and herbs or even strawberries in the vertical garden on your balcony. In this article you will find out which are suitable and which species can also cope with shadows.
Winterize vertical garden
Bad news: the vertical garden on the balcony must be removed before winter, preferably before the first frost. To do this, cut back all plants and remove the soil from the bags or bottles. Clean bags or bottles thoroughly and store them in a frost-free, dry place.
