Vertical garden systems with an irrigation system from specialist retailers are quite expensive. Therefore, home gardeners often choose to build their vertical garden themselves. Below you will find out what you should pay attention to when creating vertical gardens.

Plan the vertical garden
Before you start creating your vertical garden, you should be clear about the following questions:
- Will the vertical garden be hanging or standing and is the wall behind it stable?
- Where should the vertical garden be set up or mounted and what are the lighting conditions here?
- Do you want a vertical garden with an automatic watering system?
- Do you want an edible vertical garden or is it purely decorative?
- Do you want to build your vertical garden yourself?
Build it yourself or buy it?
If you want to create a professional vertical garden and don't want to worry about the daily watering, you should use a ready-made system from a specialist retailer. Prices start at around €150 for small models and range up to several thousand euros for cladding entire house walls.
If you prefer to do it yourself, here is a simple variant using a PVC pipe and in this guide we explain how to build your vertical garden out of pallets.
Vertical indoor gardens
With vertical gardens indoors, care must be taken to ensure that the containers are 100% airtight so that neither the walls nor the floor get wet or soiled. Therefore, closed vessels such as glasses or plastic bottles or containers are a good choice here. However, without drainage, be sure not to overwater your plants so that excess water cannot drain away.
In any case, the wall behind the wall garden should be provided with waterproof protection, e.g. made of pond liner or a coat of waterproof paint.
Vertical outdoor gardens
Creating a vertical garden outdoors is a little easier. Not only do you have significantly more plants to choose from, you don't have to take the tightness quite as seriously. Outdoor wall gardens are also often used for growing fruit and vegetables. For example, herbs, strawberries, lettuce and other small vegetables thrive in the vertical garden on the balcony or terrace.
