From October the garden will be very busy again. The time window for planting perennials and shrubs is wide open. In addition, the focus is on preparations for the winter. The following to-do list provides important information so that you can keep an overview and set the right priorities.

Spring flowering bulbs are set in the fall

Autumn time is planting time - these perennials want to go into the ground now

In autumn the earth is profoundly warmed by the rays of Indian summer sun. Garden perennials now find the ideal conditions to take root quickly and vigorously. If you missed spring as a planting time, put the following plants in the ground in autumn:

  • Bulbous flowers, such as snowdrops, tulips, daffodils, and Marchflowers
  • Hardy perennials such as columbines, coneflowers and pelargoniums
  • Bare root roses
  • Native shrubs and trees

Add mature compost and a little horn shavings (€32.93) to each planting hole. Organic fertilizers take a few months over the winter to take effect. In spring, the young plants have a richly covered nutrient buffet at their disposal.

Important care work in the autumn garden

Falling leaves take up a lot of your time in the fall. Not only the lawn suffers from a thick layer of leaves. The leaves should also not be left on the surface of the water in the pond. In addition, the following maintenance work has priority in autumn:

  • Pull tubers of begonias, dahlias and gladioli out of the ground and overwinter
  • Sweep the lawn regularly and fertilize with Patentkali for the last time
  • Allow frost-sensitive potted plants
  • Cut back perennials close to the ground and cover with leaves or straw

Autumn is the best time for pruning for slow-growing fruit trees. Young apple trees respond with increased sprouting if they are pruned while the juice is dormant. In contrast, scissors are not used until March on strong-growing trees and shrubs in order to reduce the speed of growth.

Make the garden winterized in autumn - this is how it works

Before the frost knocks at the garden gate in late autumn, the plants are prepared for the cold season. How to do it right:

  • Protect the trunks of white-painted fruit trees from cracking
  • Mow the lawn for the last time after the first frost
  • Tie ornamental grass loosely together to protect the heart from permanent wetness

Freshly planted perennials and shrubs receive a protective layer of leaves, brushwood or straw for their first winter outdoors. Pile up loose leaf soil or compost on young roses so that the grafting areas are well covered. Standard roses get a winter coat made of jute or fleece.

tips

So that everything turns green and blooms next year, the garden soil is enriched with compost and horn shavings (€32.93) in autumn. Please don't dig up the soil until after the first frost, otherwise your effort will be punished with a plague of snails next year. The pests prefer to use freshly dug clods of earth to lay their eggs and overwinter.
