So that green algae do not spread excessively in the garden pond, there are natural opponents that will quickly free you from the plague. In addition, the regrowth of algae can be well contained by thoroughly cleaning the pond and thinning out particularly vigorously growing aquatic plants.

If there are too many nutrients in the pond, green algae can form

First rule: keep faith in nature and wait and see! The green shimmer between the water lilies is completely harmless, but it does not correspond to the dreamlike idyll that a proud garden pond owner has in the back of their minds. A particularly clever idea would be to buy water fleas, which, after a few days in the pond, will keep blue or green algae in check. Daphnia, as these amphipods, which are completely harmless to humans, are also called, are available as live food in specialist shops.

Phosphates in the water promote the growth of algae

Whether your pond water suffers from an excess of nutrients and is therefore too rich in phosphate can be clarified very quickly with a test set from the pharmacy. The ideal value is below 0.035 mg/l, if it rises, it massively encourages the formation of green algae and your commitment is required. Other negative factors are the seasonally high water temperatures in the pool and particularly intense sunlight, which lead to an increased formation of green algae in the water pond. Other causes of rising phosphate and (therefore also) nutrient levels include:

  • heavy rainfall (pH values change);
  • exposure to scattered plant and lawn fertilizer;
  • muddy pond bottom due to uneaten food, fish droppings and dead plant parts, etc.

First aid for green algae in the garden pond

If the algae infestation does not go away on its own even after several weeks, a thorough renovation of the pond floor and the bank areas should be considered. This means that the so-called sludge layer in the water basin may be removed together with the pond soil. After the aquatic plants have been severely pruned or divided, it is better not to plant them in soil, but on substrate and with the help of plant baskets in the individual pond zones.

Use natural algae fighters

Frog bites, crab claws, duckweed and other floating plants also help in a natural way to deprive the algae of nutrients. Therefore, at least one third of the pond surface should be overgrown. In practice, small fountains and cascades have also proven themselves, which ensure constant movement of the water and significantly reduce the formation of green algae in the garden pond.

tips

A positive effect on regulating the pH value is achieved if a thicker oak branch is placed in the pond water. The tannic acid released significantly worsens the survival conditions for green algae. However, before the decomposition begins, the wood has to be removed from the pond again.
