The plant genus Euphorbia includes so fundamentally different types of the so-called spurge plants that there should be something for every visual taste. Due to the countries of origin of these often succulent plant species, the window sill is generally preferable to the outdoor bed.

The poinsettia is probably the most popular type of euphorbia

Many popular houseplants are euphorbias

Since euphorbias usually do not tolerate frost, they are almost predestined for a sunny place on the windowsill in this country. Some varieties even appreciate the heat that occurs directly behind the window glass in direct sunlight and do not particularly mind care mistakes such as irregular watering. No wonder, then, that some of the most popular indoor plants can be found within this plant genus, for example:

  • the triangular spurge
  • the spurge cactus
  • The christmas star

These spurge species can not only be found in well-stocked plant shops, but are usually also particularly easy to propagate yourself.

Be careful when dealing with euphorbia

No matter how excited you may be about the exotic beauty of various species of Euphorbia, you should never be fooled by the potential danger these plants pose. When cutting a Euphorbia in particular, suitable protective measures against the poisonous plant sap must be observed. Since this latex-like milky sap can leak out even if the plants are slightly injured, spurge plants should be positioned out of the reach of pets and small children. If you come into contact with the milky juice, wash it off immediately, as it can not only cause skin irritation and poisoning, but is also said to have an accelerating effect on the growth of tumours.

Respond to the needs of each subspecies

Even if there are certain similarities between the different spurge species, the different species should also be cared for according to their respective needs. While some euphorbias like it sunny all year round, others should rather spend their annual dormancy in a partially shaded location. Since the needs of the common euphorbias for the culture in the house are very different, you should always consult the information in the respective plant profile.

tips

With most euphorbias, the plant pot can easily be filled with commercially available cactus soil. For healthy growth, a euphorbia should generally be kept relatively dry rather than too wet.
