Frangipani or Plumeria can be propagated by sowing as well as by cuttings. Propagation via cuttings is relatively easy and is therefore carried out much more frequently. How to pull offshoots from frangipani.
If the frangipani is propagated via cuttings, the new plant often flowers in the first yearPropagating frangipani by cuttings
Propagating frangipani from cuttings has several advantages. For one thing, growth is much faster. The plant often flowers in the first year. Plumeria grown from seeds only start flowering after three to five years.
In addition, the use of cuttings ensures that you get pure offshoots of your frangipani. With sown plants, it is a pure gamble in which colors the frangipani will later bloom.
cut cuttings
Preferably cut the cuttings in spring. Then the growth phase begins and rooting succeeds faster. In addition, there is sufficient light and warmth in summer so that the young plants can develop well.
The shoots that you cut as cuttings must be lignified and about 25 cm long. Incidentally, the mother plant branches at the interfaces and becomes more compact as a result. Use a previously cleaned knife. The cut should be made as straight as possible. This prevents the cut edges from fraying and giving germs access.
Before rooting the cuttings, allow the cuttings to dry for several days. This will prevent the sap from running out later.
Allow to root in a water glass or pot
- Place the cuttings in a glass of water
- Change water every two days
- alternatively stick in potting soil
- set up bright and warm
The water glass should be filled with water about five centimeters high. Change the water every two days to keep rot from developing. Place the glass in a location that is as bright and warm as possible. But avoid direct sunlight.
You can also try putting the cuttings straight into prepared seed pots (€16.68). But then you have to make sure there is enough moisture.
Plant out after rooting
It often only takes two to three weeks for the frangipani cuttings to develop roots several inches long. Now you can repot them into prepared pots.
tips
Cuttings of yellow and white varieties of frangipani usually root better than those of red plumeria.
