If the building structure is still relatively good and only the roof of the arbor is damaged, it is worth installing a new roof for financial reasons alone. In addition, you save yourself a trip to the building authority, because a new house often has to be approved again. Reason enough, then, to grab the hammer and nail yourself and renovate the garden house roof from the ground up.

Bricks are unsuitable for most garden houses

When does it need to be renewed?

Smaller, damaged areas through which moisture can penetrate can in many cases still be sealed… In this way, the deterioration of the roof can often be delayed for a longer period of time. In any case, it must be renewed if the entire roof construction has serious defects.

What condition is the roof in?

  • First, check how the old roof was constructed and what materials were used.
  • The assembly instructions can be extremely helpful here.
  • In addition to the roof covering, do the basic framework and battens also have to be renewed?
  • Based on this inventory, you can get the required materials in the hardware store.

The stable substructure

A new roof needs a stable substructure made of intermediate rafters and planks. If they make a dilapidated impression, you should definitely replace them. In this way, the roof can also bear high snow loads if necessary and has sufficient stability for the subsequent new roofing. Depending on the construction, the new slats and/or the roof cladding made of OSB panels are attached.

Cover the new roof

  • A sanded underlay is first nailed onto the substructure.
  • Attach gutter hanging plates to the horizontal roof edges.
  • In the case of a pitched roof, also mount verge plates on the sloping roof sides.
  • Lay roofing felt or bitumen shingles overlapping from bottom to top.
  • Screw on new ridge plate.

Why no roof tiles?

Undoubtedly, roof tiles or concrete roofing stones look extremely attractive as a roof covering of the garden house. However, they are heavy and therefore require a very stable substructure. In addition, laying roof tiles is significantly more complicated than nailing roofing felt or bitumen shingles.

Don't forget the gutter

So that the water does not run unhindered from the garden house (€24.90), it is advisable to install a rain gutter. Suitable plastic gutters and downpipes with a small cross-section can be bought at any hardware store.

Sometimes the roof covering of older garden houses still contains asbestos. This substance must be completely removed and, since it is harmful to health and the environment, disposed of according to regulations. Always wear suitable protective clothing when working with asbestos!
