Small children in particular are fascinated by water and, despite all their curiosity and enthusiasm for experimentation, are unfortunately rarely able to perceive upcoming dangers early enough. Making a pond safe for children is therefore a particularly important task that every property owner has to face.

Children should be made aware of the dangers of a garden pond

The splashing of a water feature as well as the shimmering water surface of the ornamental pond draw children almost magically. And if there are still fish swimming in it, the curious little ones are happy to bend a little further over the edge of the bank. However, the impending danger of an accident can be prevented with simple means. Setting up a fence as an effective child safety device is quick and inexpensive.

Protection with pond nets

These very effective protections for ponds consist of sturdy fence mesh that is installed just above the pond surface and secured to the bank edge with ground anchors. Over time, the aquatic plants will grow through the mesh, making the safety wire almost invisible. A child falling into the pond will not fall into the deep water if the attachment is properly adjusted and anchored.

Structural measures to protect the pond

A number of protective measures can be implemented as early as the planning stage, which later make the ornamental pond safe for children and, like the fence mentioned at the beginning, could be dismantled when the offspring have outgrown the critical toddler age. Some food for thought on this:

  • it is better not to build a deep zone directly on the edge of the bank;
  • Keep embankments and bank zones as flat as possible and let them descend slowly;
  • always place clearly visible, larger stones and pebbles at the edges;
  • Sufficiently secure jetties and bridges at the sides;
  • plant the edge area with larger plants (common rushes) that a child can hold on to if necessary;

Active education about the dangers at the pond

Talking to the children regularly about the possible risks should be a regular feature on the parental agenda, even at the hundredth “don't do that”. Sometimes it even makes sense to build your own children's pond including a sandcastle for the little ones, while the "right" pool, at least up to the age of 10, is declared a total taboo zone.

tips

The topic of a child-safe garden pond is also relevant for you if your property is not surrounded by an appropriately effective enclosure and thus strange children could get close to the water basin and injure themselves.
