You don't have to spend a lot of money for a beautiful garden pond decoration. Depending on personal taste, it is less about quantity and more about class. Simply craft something yourself for your resting place in the garden, as we will show you with our floating island.

Stones, fish and plants: the alpha and omega of every garden pond decoration

Pretty sculptures, beautiful flowers or small watercourses that just trickle along make the ornamental pond a real garden highlight. Even the traditional garden gnomes, water-spewing frogs, dragons or turtles are part of the garden pond decoration and if the Greek deities or African Buddhas are too kitschy, a small fountain creates a pleasant flair for your afternoon nap in the natural biotope.

Play of light for a night by the pond

The muggy, warm summer evenings in particular often invite you to linger at the edge of the pond well into the night. With a practical lighting, whether as individually set up lanterns, rustic terracotta lights or with technically somewhat complex illumination using hidden LEDs, the cosiness comes directly to the small wonderland even without sun.

Decorate the pond with your own island

If you don't like the commercially available decoration ideas, there are no limits to your own creativity, for example with a home-made island that floats on an old styrofoam plate (€35.50). The following ingredients are required for the new island:

  • a slightly thicker styrofoam sheet;
  • a larger stone and sturdy cord for the anchor;
  • pond plants and wild herbs that are not too large;
  • a sturdy kitchen knife;

The floating island is born

If possible, choose a styrofoam plate that cannot absorb water, otherwise there is a risk of sinking. The desired contours are first cut out with a knife and then, depending on the size, several not too large openings are made in the plate so that the pond water can later reach the roots unhindered. Then arrange the plants according to your ideas and then remove as much soil as possible. The gaps are filled with moss https://www.gartenjournal.net/moos-zuechten-buttermilch so that the plate is completely covered at the end.

Before the structure is lowered into the water, the stone must now be attached to the underside of the styrofoam plate as an anchor using a sufficiently long cord.

tips

Just drill the holes in the plate big enough so that the plants don't fall through and also pay attention to the balance with regard to the planting, then the island will float particularly stably.
