Necessity is known to be the mother of invention, which can be observed particularly in people who set up a greenhouse in their home. No front garden, not even a balcony and yet you don't have to do without a portion of fresh vegetables or the most important kitchen herbs.

Even in a city apartment, nobody has to go without fresh and home-grown vegetables. We have already reported on indoor greenhouses, which have become real trendy furniture over the years. The yields are rather modest in terms of quantity, but fresh green in the living area is always goodas many scientific studies have shown. Indoors, plants not only improve humidity levels, they also reduce the concentration of dust and other pollutants in the air we breathe. A greenhouse in the apartment has the advantage that it usually does not require any complex air conditioning.
Greenhouse effect on the window sill
There are plenty of creative ideas on how to get hold of a few home-grown vitamin donors in a prefabricated building.
- Tomato plants are first grown from self-gathered seeds in small mini greenhouses on the windowsill. The young plants are then relocated to pots and grow up a light-flooded wall in the living room.
- A standard flower box is sufficient for parsley and many other kitchen herbs (€16.99) the one with one Mixture of garden soil, compost and sand filled and placed on the window sill.
- Vertical wall gardening, living picture style would be another variation that has become an architectural trend. Whole room walls are greened with vertically growing plants. Beans, peas and even ornamental gourds with small fruits are ideal for this. Basically, all you need is a trellis, lots of light and at least one diligent waterer in the family.
Fruit trees instead of a greenhouse
Mini fruit trees, which are now available from many garden shops, are also suitable as a replacement for a greenhouse in the apartment. Dwarf fruit grows in the smallest of spaces, sometimes even a bucket in the size of one square meter. Latest breeds are only up to one meter high. The trees delight in spring with wonderful blossoms, at harvest time with delicious fruit yields and for many weeks in between with their pleasantly fresh summer scent. In addition to the dwarf apple varieties, the cherries, nectarines and peaches in mini format have surprisingly good growth traits. Particularly important: Your greenhouse in the apartment should be placed in a consistently sunny room that is not too warm.
tips
In strong sunlight, plants standing directly at the window can easily be damaged due to the greenhouse effect. Sensible ventilation or darkening, for example through a tilted window or shading with an interior roller blind, is particularly recommended for kitchen herbs.
