A stable and load-bearing foundation frame has the task of accommodating all wall elements and then connecting the greenhouse to the foundation as a whole. In most cases, self-construction uses age-resistant and easy-to-assemble U-profiles made of aluminum that are screwed together.

There are several ways to connect the greenhouse to the foundation

A stable base is one of the most important prerequisites for the stability of any building. We have already described in a detailed article on our portal which tasks a foundation has when building a greenhouse and which types of construction are distinguished. Once the supporting substructure has been completed, you now have to connect the greenhouse to the foundation. Next to the supporting function is another task of this construction is a possible airtight and watertight connection between the substructure and the masonry or covering materials, which will later ensure maximum thermal insulation.

For lightweight constructions, for example with foil covering, a poured concrete foundation can often be dispensed with. Here it is sufficient if the base area on the ground is properly compacted and prepared completely flat. A foundation frame is placed over this, in which in each corner 20 to 40 cm long spurs are placed, which are now being driven into the ground. A particularly stable and durable connection is achieved with an aluminum frame that is almost indestructible and can be assembled without outside help. Alternatively, such frames can be screwed onto a prefabricated wooden foundation or, in the case of a ring foundation, poured into the liquid concrete at the same time.

Build your own foundation frame

In addition to aluminium, a wide variety of materials from wood to plastic to hot-dip galvanized steel can be used for this. The individual parts are screwed or welded together, depending on personal taste. It must be ensured that they finally form a horizontal plane as an overall frame. If you use a metal or plastic frame to connect the greenhouse to the foundation and pour it into the ground together with the concrete, be sure to take into account the hardening time of the base. There should be at least two days between installing the greenhouse walls or windows.

Connect prefab greenhouses to a foundation

The foundation frame mentioned above usually consists of several individual parts, which are no less robust and stable, but first have to be assembled. Note when assembling be sure to read the enclosed assembly instructions for the frame, as otherwise any warranty claims due to defects in the overall construction that occur later are at risk.

tips

The connection between the greenhouse and the foundation is very exposed to moisture near the ground, which can have the effect of premature material wear, especially in the case of wood. Therefore, treat these components before assembly with a suitable wood preservative to prevent the formation of rot.
