Raised beds are surrounded by a wide variety of materials - from concrete blocks to natural stone to wooden casings. Each of these materials suffers to a different extent when in contact with moist soil.
Conversely, the climate in a raised bed should always be slightly damp. If possible, the moisture in the soil should not escape too much so that plants inside the raised bed can also thrive.
Lining with foil
A foil lining primarily protects the casing in the raised bed. Despite wood protection, wood that is in constant contact with moist soil will be attacked over time.
There is no wood protection that could really prevent this - with the exception of the highly toxic tar products such as carbolineum, which are now banned. But nobody wants to use something like that in their garden.
Lining the raised bed with foil effectively protects the border of the bed from constant moisture and at the same time maintains the necessary moisture for the plants inside.
A suitable film must have the following properties:
- it must be robust and resilient
- it should be tear-resistant and very tight - in all temperature ranges
- it should definitely be ecologically harmless and suitable for plants
In view of these properties, EPDM foil is the most suitable. PVC films age relatively quickly and lose the plasticizers they contain. This makes them brittle and leaks over time.
In addition, PVC foils are far less resilient than EPDM foils - they quickly lose their flexibility, especially at lower temperatures. And PVC film can by no means be regarded as ecologically harmless and suitable for plants.
The cost difference between PVC sheeting and EPDM sheeting is usually not significant given the small amount needed for a raised bed. Although PVC foils are also offered for this purpose, EPDM foils are clearly the better choice here as they are completely environmentally neutral.
