We associate cacti with uncomplicated care that does not require a green thumb. This view is only partially true, because the successful keeping of exotic succulents requires important aspects to be considered. We have summarized all the key factors for vital growth and a long cactus life here for you.

When keeping cacti, the most important thing is the right location

The be-all and end-all is the right location

If the light and temperature conditions are to the taste of cacti, half of the way is already done. The wishes of desert cacti and leaf cacti differ slightly. How to make the right choice:

  • Desert cacti: Full to sunny from March to September at 20 to 35 degrees Celsius
  • Leaf cacti: Partial shade from March to September, preferably with higher humidity of 60 percent
  • From May to August preferably on the balcony in a sunny or partially shaded spot

For the winter time, almost all types of cacti need a bright, cool location with 5 to 12 degrees Celsius. Without a cool hibernation, the plants will not produce any or only a few buds for the next flowering period.

Water and fertilize properly at any time of the year - this is how it works

One of the main pillars in the professional care of cacti is a periodically moist substrate during the growth period and dry soil during the hibernation. How to do it right:

  • Allow the soil to dry out well from March to the end of August and then water thoroughly
  • The larger the cactus, the longer the intervals between watering
  • Enrich every second irrigation water with liquid cactus fertilizer
  • Starting in September, reduce the water supply and stop fertilizing

In the period from November to February, desert cacti are almost dry in the cool winter quarters. For majestic columnar cacti, for example, give a thorough watering in November, which usually covers the water needs until February. Leaf cacti will need to be watered every now and then to keep the root ball inside from drying out.

tips

Lovingly cared for, cacti take on unexpected dimensions over time. Don't be afraid to regulate growth with a pruning. The best time is in spring, when the winter break is coming to an end. Use sharp, sanitized tools and dust the wounds with charcoal ash.
