When it comes to care, cacti rarely require horticultural attention. Wrong hibernation, on the other hand, is punished with a consistent refusal to flower. In order for your prickly roommates to actually put on their buds in winter, important general conditions must be observed. This guide explains how to do it right.

This is how cacti survive the tricky winter time
A winter dormancy of 3 to 4 months is essential for cacti to flower next year. The succulents are prepared for a cool dry season to follow after a hot summer. By simulating natural conditions as closely as possible, you support this exotic vegetation cycle. How to do it:
- Gradually reduce the amount of irrigation water from September
- From November to February, do not water or only water in sips every few weeks
- During this time place in a bright and cool place at temperatures between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius
It is important to note that no freshly poured cactus moves to a cool winter quarters. Under the influence of low temperatures, the substrate no longer dries out, so rot occurs and the plant dies. The cooler the winter location, the less light is required. At 7 degrees Celsius, a bright window in the basement is enough to overwinter cacti undamaged.
A balanced supply of nutrients strengthens resistance
In the course of the almost dry hibernation, cacti consume up to two thirds of their water and nutrient reserves. Regular fertilizing in summer helps to ensure that they survive this hardship in one piece. If you add liquid cactus fertilizer to the water every second watering from May to September, the plants will be well prepared for the cold season.
tips
Permanent wetness due to rain and snowfall is a problem for hardy cacti in beds. So that these species can prove their frost hardiness, they should be equipped with a rain cover. Even a simple frame made of wooden pegs and translucent greenhouse film (€15.90) is enough to successfully overwinter the exotic outdoor cacti.
