This attractive thick-leaved plant is one of the largest representatives of the Kalanchoe. In the wild, the plant can grow up to three meters high. In room culture, the succulent remains significantly smaller, even with good care, and rarely reaches a size of more than 60 centimeters. As with all Kalanchoen, breeding is possible without any problems.

The Kalanchoe Beharensis can be easily propagated via leaf cuttings

How is it multiplied?

Kalanchoe Beharensis can be easily propagated by leaf cuttings. The plant often forms small offshoots on the leaf edges without any further action, which can be separated and used directly.

Cut leaf cuttings

For this purpose, take off a healthy leaf and prepare it as follows:

  • Using a very sharp knife or razor blade, cut a strip from the outer edge.
  • Cut large leaves into several parts.
  • Make three more cuts from the edge towards the center of the sheet.

Plant cuttings in soil

Now provide each cutting with a loop of floral wire and insert the other end of the attachment into moistened succulent soil. Alternatively, you can simply place the pieces on the ground.

Keep the substrate evenly moist. So that the plant parts are not washed away, it is advisable to use a sprayer. Covering with a hood is possible, but not essential.

Place the jars in a bright, warm and shady place on the windowsill. Small elephant ear offshoots soon form at the trimmed edges.

Encourage the mother plant to sprout offshoots

The same procedure can also be performed directly on the mother plant. Also cut off the edge of a sheet and make several incisions.

Place offspring in substrate

As soon as the small plants have reached a size of about two centimetres, they are placed in pots with succulent soil and cared for like adult plants.

tips

You can try to propagate the elephant ear in a completely different way. Separate a sheet and place it dry. After a certain time, roots begin to sprout at the cutting point, and young plants often form directly here. Wait until the mother leaf has dried up and then continue cultivating in soil.
