From around February to June, the Flammende Käthchen delights its viewers with a lush bloom. The plant is considered quite undemanding, but is usually discarded after flowering. However, this is not necessary, because the Kalanchoe - as the Flaming Käthchen is also called - can easily be overwintered and with a few tricks it can also be used to flower again in the following years.

Flaming Käthchen comes from Madagascar
The Flaming Katy belongs to the Kalanchoe genus, which in turn belongs to the Succulent family. The succulent plant also bears the nickname Madagascar bells, which in turn indicates its origin. The pretty plant originally comes from the African island of Madagascar, where it is adapted to a hot and very dry climate. Here, too, the Flammende Käthchen feels most comfortable in a sunny, warm and sheltered - especially rain-protected - location. Of course, the plant, which comes from the tropics, is not hardy here - quite the opposite, because the temperatures should not fall below 10 °C even in winter, 15 to 22 °C are more optimal.
Overwintering flaming Käthchen properly
Under these conditions, the Flammende Käthchen can easily be overwintered in the living room at home, provided that the other conditions there are also right.
- From around November, the plant needs a few weeks of hibernation.
- Otherwise, it feels very comfortable with sufficient light.
- There is also less watering in winter than during the growing season.
- Fertilization should also be stopped.
- You can overwinter the Kalanchoe in the living room,
- however, a cooler hibernation at temperatures between 10 and 15 °C is better.
- The bedroom is suitable for this, but a conservatory is also a suitable place.
Think about the next bloom as early as winter
During the winter months you have to prepare the plant for the next flowering period, because the Kalanchoe only forms buds if it does not receive more than a maximum of nine hours of light per day for a few weeks - regardless of whether it is natural or artificial. You should simulate these conditions at home so that you can still enjoy the pretty flowers in the following year.
tips
If you cut back the Flaming Katy after flowering, it will sprout again and more vigorously. Immediately after flowering, the plant can sometimes be “persuaded” to flower a second time if you pluck off the faded flowers.
