The Flammende Käthchen, often also commercially available under the name Kalanchoe, has enjoyed great popularity for several years. The lush flowering houseplant brings bright colors into the living room and is also easy to care for. Unfortunately, the pretty plant is often disposed of as soon as it has withered - but that is not necessary, because with a few tricks you can make the plant bloom in the years to come.

If the Flaming Katy is properly cared for after flowering, it will flower again

Flaming Katy is not a disposable plant

The Kalanchoe is wrongly considered a disposable plant, after all it would only bloom for one season and then no longer want to show its flowers. However, this is only due to the local light conditions, because the Kalanchoe is a so-called short-day plant. These only form new flowers if they are only exposed to a light source for a few hours a day over a period of a few weeks - as a result, a Flammendes Käthchen that overwinters in a warm and usually brightly lit living room is unlikely to develop any buds.

Caring for Flaming Katy properly after flowering

In order for your Flammendes Käthchen to have flowers in the following year, you just have to keep the plant quite poor in light for a while. The best way to do this is as follows:

  • First cut back the plant after flowering.
  • This measure rejuvenates the plant and ensures that new, strong shoots sprout.
  • At best, combine the pruning with the repotting.
  • Place the Flaming Katy in fresh substrate.
  • From around November, the plant should not be exposed to a light source for more than eight to nine hours a day.
  • This applies to both natural and artificial light.
  • Make sure that the plant z. B. dark from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.
  • Put a box or bucket over it, for example.
  • Place them in a windowless room or in a closet.
  • A reduced room temperature of around 10 to 15 °C would also be beneficial.
  • Water significantly less and stop fertilizing.
  • This condition should last about six to eight weeks.
  • The Flaming Katie is then cultivated as normal.
