Kalanchoe blossfeldiana or Flaming Katy is a thick-leaved succulent plant that offers a multitude of colorful flowers during the dark season and is therefore a popular houseplant - the red or orange, four-petaled flowers provide a little happiness in the dark season. Like so many other attractive indoor plants, the Flaming Katy is poisonous - but only for cats, because the plant is completely harmless to humans.

Flaming Katy is poisonous to cats

Flaming Katy harmless to humans

According to information from the information center against poisoning at the University Hospital Bonn, the ingredients of the Kalanchoe have not (yet) been researched and are therefore unknown. However, symptoms of poisoning in humans, whether large or small, are extremely rare. Therefore, the plant, which originally comes from tropical East Africa, is considered non-toxic and therefore harmless, at least for humans. Symptoms of poisoning such as vomiting and abdominal pain have only been described very rarely after the consumption of large amounts of parts of the plant. However, the Flaming Katy is not considered food either, which is why you should better refrain from enjoying leaves and flowers.

Cat owners should avoid Flammendes Käthchen

For cats, however, the Flammendes Käthchen is highly toxic due to a steroid it contains and can cause severe symptoms of poisoning and even death if the house cat frequently nibbles on it. As a cat owner, you shouldn't assume that your furry friend will know what's going to happen to him or not - cats really can't tell and they like to nibble on plants that are poisonous to them. therefore it is better not to use a Flaming Katy or make sure that your cat definitely cannot get at it.

tips

When you go outside, keep an eye out for any poisonous plants in the garden or on the neighbors: Flaming Katy in particular is often placed outside or planted in the garden during the summer months.
