With the window leaf, even young gardeners transform their home into an evergreen oasis of well-being with a jungle atmosphere. If the expert care raises any questions, there are practice-oriented answers here. How to properly water, fertilize, prune and overwinter Monstera.

Additional moisture should be provided in winter

How to water the window leaf?

The water supply is not based on a clearly defined schedule, but takes place according to need. How to water correctly:

  • Keep the substrate continuously moist in all seasons
  • Ideally, let the soil dry out a bit between waterings
  • Spray the evergreen leaves with soft water from time to time

In summer, the water requirement is significantly higher than in winter. On hot summer days it is an advantage if some aerial roots are in a bowl of water. In this way you effectively prevent dry balls. Please only use collected rainwater or stagnant tap water.

Does the houseplant need fertilizer regularly?

Fertilize your window leaf once a week from April to September. To do this, add half the concentration of liquid plant fertilizer to the watering water. If Monstera thrive in normal room temperatures all year round, continue the nutrient supply in winter with monthly fertilizer applications. If a window leaf overwinters cool and dark, adjust the nutrient supply between October and March.

Can I cut back my window leaf?

If the ornamental houseplant grows too much for you, you can cut it back without a murmur. Shoots that are too long can be shortened by up to two thirds. Monstera reliably drive out of the sleeping eyes. Please put on gloves to avoid coming into contact with the poisonous plant sap.

Incidentally, the clippings are far too good to be disposed of on the compost heap. As long as a shoot has at least one aerial root, it has what it takes to become a vigorous cutting.

How do Monstera get through the winter safely?

All Monstera species prefer pleasant room temperatures around 22 degrees Celsius all year round. The thermometer can drop slightly during the dark winter months. The darker the location, the cooler it can be. The maintenance is modified accordingly. This is how the window leaf overwinters:

  • The minimum temperature is 10 to 15 degrees Celsius
  • Reduce watering and fertilize every 4 weeks at half concentration
  • In the cool, dark winter quarters at 10 degrees Celsius do not administer any fertilizer

The window leaf does not like dry heating air. Therefore, spray the mighty leaves regularly with lime-free water, especially during the winter.

tips

On average, every 2 to 3 years, the care program is expanded to include the project: repotting in a new bucket. However, only expose the majestic climbing plant to this stress when the first root strands are growing out of the opening in the ground or pushing through the substrate. The best time to switch to a larger pot is between the end of winter dormancy and fresh growth.
