Have you discovered other niches in your home that a window leaf should breathe green life into? Then you can save yourself the purchase of new plants. By sacrificing a leaf or shoot, you can easily breed a whole flock of young monstera. This guide tells you how to do this.

From leaf to finished Monstera - A step-by-step guide
An adult window leaf easily copes with having to sacrifice one of its impressive leaves as an offshoot for propagation. Spring is the best time to cut a head cutting. If the start of the new vegetation period is imminent, rooting progresses all the more quickly. A leaf alone does not make a cutting on the window leaf. How to proceed professionally:
- Cut off one leaf including the stem and at least one aerial root
- Let the interface dry in an airy place for 30 to 60 minutes
- Meanwhile, fill a large pot with coconut fiber substrate, pricking soil or peat sand
- Insert the head cutting with aerial roots and water
At the end, stick a wooden stick into the substrate to the right and left of the shoot and put a plastic bag over it. Until a fresh shoot signals the successful progress of the rooting, the humid and warm microclimate under the hood makes a vitalizing contribution.
Breeding a whole flock of Monstera from a stem cutting - this is how it works
A piece of non-lignified, leafless shoot axis is referred to as a stem cutting. Instead of leaves, this cutting has several dormant eyes. These are dormant leaf buds that can be recognized as round vegetation points. By cutting a stem cutting between these vegetation points, you have suitable material for propagation in your hands. How to proceed correctly:
- For each section, fill a pot with lean potting soil
- Spray the substrate with lime-free water
- Lay the stem cutting horizontally on top and press down
- The sleeping eye points upwards
Ideally, you place the seed pots (€16.68) in a heated indoor greenhouse. Alternatively, put a plastic bag or a glass hood over it. Air the cover daily at the semi-shady, warm window seat. For the supply of water, preferably water from below. To do this, place the pot in soft water for a few minutes, which will rise due to capillary action.
Roots and leaves develop from the vegetation points. In contrast to head cuttings, this process takes a long time. If a stem cutting has fully rooted its seed pot, repot it into a larger bucket. From this point on, the propagation phase leads to the normal care program for an adult window leaf.
tips
A monstera fruit thrives as an aggregate fruit made up of countless berries. A single berry contains 1 to 3 seeds that have no endosperm. If a seed lacks this nutrient tissue, using it for sowing is just as complicated as with orchids.
