Succulents like the Aeonium arboreum can also be propagated. Various methods are possible, which have different degrees of success or have different degrees of difficulty. Try out which method suits you best or simply choose the most promising one.

Aeonium arboreum is best grown from cuttings

What methods are suitable for propagating Aeonium?

You can propagate your Aeonium arboreum with the help of head or leaf cuttings, but you can also simply sow them. Cutting cuttings is easier and more promising. The sowing is quite time-consuming and therefore more suitable for advanced hobby gardeners.

Methods of propagating Aeonium arboreum:

  • head cuttings
  • leaf cuttings
  • sowing

How do I grow Aeonium arboreum from cuttings?

If you want to grow a head cutting, then cut off a complete rosette with a trunk piece five to ten centimeters long. However, do not take a rosette that has previously flowered, as this rosette will die. For a leaf cutting you only need a single leaf, which should be cut or plucked as deep as you can from the rosette.

The chance for a successful propagation is greatest in spring. Put your cuttings in a very sandy, moist substrate or in a commercially available household sponge with small pores. You can cut the sponge beforehand with a sharp knife, then your cutting will not break off so easily. At least two-thirds of the leaf cuttings must stick out. Then water the sponge or the substrate.

Your cuttings now need a light and warm place where they are not exposed to direct sunlight. When your young plants have grown a few centimetres, you can plant them in a special substrate for succulents. However, protect the plants from the blazing midday sun for a longer period of time (approx. one year).

Tips and tricks for propagation:

  • the best time for all methods is spring
  • keep moist and avoid mold growth
  • place bright but out of direct sunlight
  • Grow seeds at temperatures of 23°C to 28°C
  • Sow under foil or in a mini greenhouse

tips

The sowing of the Aeonium arboreum is quite tedious. If you want to see success quickly, it is better to cut cuttings.
