The flamingo flower is considered to be a very robust plant that requires little care and still shows its attractive flowers all year round. However, it is important for good growth that you transplant the anthurium regularly. The reason for this is not only the growth, but also the fact that regular watering with tap water increases the pH value of the soil. These plants are extremely sensitive to this.

When repotting, the roots must not be damaged

Which substrate is suitable

Anthuriums thrive in nature both on the ground in the shade of large trees and as epiphytes. Accordingly, they love loose, air-permeable and relatively acidic substrates. Meets these requirements:

  • commercial orchid soil
  • Peat growing medium (low in nutrients, use this, needs to be fertilized more frequently).
  • Mixture of compost, peat and sand
  • Commercially available potting soil that you loosen up with styrofoam balls or clay granules.

The pot size

Anthurium flowers do not form a large root ball, but grow out of a fleshy rootstock. Accordingly, the plants do not need very large containers. When repotting young Anthuriums, a pot that is only one size larger than the previous one is sufficient. Older plants are no longer transplanted. It is sufficient for them to replace the substrate once a year.

The repot

Be very careful not to damage the easily breaking roots. First loosen the plant from the planter by kneading it or with a very sharp knife that you run along the inside edge of the pot.

  • Cover the drainage hole of the new pot with a potsherd.
  • Fill in a two to three centimeter thick drainage layer of expanded clay (19.73€) or gravel.
  • Add about half the potting soil.
  • Lift the anthurium out of the old pot.
  • Carefully remove the used substrate.
  • Place in the new pot and fill in the remaining gaps with soil.
  • casting.

Since coarse substrate is difficult to press on, you put the pot firmly on several times. This compresses the earth and you can refill a little if necessary.

tips

Make absolutely sure not to insert the flamingo flower deeper than before. The plant is extremely sensitive to this.
