The attractive houseplant Zamioculcas zamiifolia or lucky feather can easily be propagated vegetatively. There are various ways to do this, all of which have a high success rate. Vegetative propagation is an asexual form of propagation in which the offspring are created from individual parts of the plant and are therefore exactly the same as the mother plant - after all, it is basically just a clone of the same.

Divide zamioculcas in spring
Plants with multiple shoots, such as the Zamioculcas, can be easily divided if the intended plant is large enough.
- Repot the plant at the end of the dormant period.
- This is usually the case in early spring.
- Separate the root ball into two or more pieces.
- You may need to use a knife to do this.
- Each section must have healthy roots and at least one strong shoot.
- Place the plants that have been divided in this way individually in fresh substrate.
- Ready!
Separate and plant offshoots
In the case of the Zamioculcas, complete young plants, the so-called offshoots, often develop all by themselves in addition to the main shoot. So that they can quickly develop into strong specimens, separate them from the mother plant in spring or summer and place them separately in new containers with fresh substrate. Basically, you proceed in exactly the same way as with a division of the lucky pen.
Cut leaf cuttings
Zamioculcas can also be propagated very well with leaf cuttings that are simply stuck in the substrate. The best time for this measure is spring or early summer.
- To do this, pluck off as large a pinnate leaf as possible.
- You can also cut it off, but then it won't take root as well.
- Choose a leaf from the bottom or middle of the vein.
- Fill seed pots (€16.68) with potting soil or a mixture of potting soil and sand.
- Now insert the leaf cuttings with the severed side down.
- The leaves should be about an inch deep in the ground.
- Plant the leaves individually or in groups in a pot.
In order to accelerate tuber and root formation, the cuttings should always be kept warm and humid. A transparent plastic hood, which is simply pulled over, does a good job here. Freezer bags are very suitable for this, which are positioned over the pot with the help of support rods in such a way that they do not touch the plant. However, PET bottles that have been cut off can also be used for this purpose. Choose a bright but not directly sunny location (e.g. on a window sill). Now it's time to wait, because it can take half a year for the planted leaf to take root. During this time, always keep the substrate slightly moist.
tips
You can also dip the freshly cut cuttings in a rooting hormone before planting, which will encourage rooting.
