In order for the dragon tree to thrive as a houseplant or on the balcony, the location and care measures should be adapted to its special needs. This also means that you should pay close attention to the soil you use when repotting the dragon tree.

The perfect soil for the dragon tree is easy to mix

It depends on the right pH value

The pH value of the soil around the roots of the dragon tree should be in the slightly acidic range around a pH value of 6. This value can be achieved by mixing commercially available potting soil with a little peat, whereby the test can be carried out relatively easily using appropriate test strips. Since potting soil, even with a certain amount of peat, tends to "slump" over time, dragon trees should be repotted almost every year.

Mix the perfect soil for the dragon tree yourself

A compacted plant substrate can sometimes lead to waterlogging at the roots of the various dragon tree species, which in turn can lead to dramatic leaf loss. To save an already ailing dragon tree, you can mix your own ideal substrate from the following ingredients:

  • a third potting soil
  • one third clayey or loamy garden soil
  • one-sixth coarse sand
  • one sixth lava granules or pumice gravel

tips

It makes caring for a dragon tree enormously easier if it is grown hydroponically, as this ensures a constant water supply without the risk of waterlogging.
