If you want to harvest early, you can prefer your savoy cabbage on the windowsill. You should choose an early Savoy cabbage variety. You can then grow them in seed trays from the beginning of February. Make sure that you water the growing plants regularly and that they do not get any direct heating air. Prick them out as soon as the seedlings have two pairs of leaves or plant them directly outdoors, weather permitting.

Savoy likes sun, but can also cope with partial shade. But the floor is particularly important. Like all types of cabbage, savoy is one of the heavy feeders, which is why the correct crop rotation must be observed: all types of cabbage may only be planted in the same place every four years, whereby green manure should be used in the year before sowing again to enrich the soil with nutrients.

Planting or sowing savoy cabbage step by step

  • Thoroughly loosen the soil with a hoe.
  • Add several liters of compost and some lime to the soil and mix in well.
  • Put the seeds 1cm deep in the ground or place the seedlings in the ground.
  • Depending on the variety, keep a planting distance of 35 to 80 cm. Early varieties usually need less space because they grow smaller. You can also plant the plants more densely, but then you will have to prick them out.
  • Thoroughly water your newly planted savoy cabbage.
