Your orchids know exactly what they want. High on the wish list are bright lighting conditions. Read here what exactly is hidden behind this definition. These symptoms indicate improper light at the site.

Orchids like it bright but not too sunny

Full sun is not desirable in summer

The queen of flowers likes to hold court wherever the lighting conditions simulate the conditions in their natural habitat as perfectly as possible. Orchids come from the rainforests of tropical regions. Here they perch majestically on the branches where the canopy filters the sunshine. How to meet plant expectations:

  • A bright, not full sun location with a light intensity of 70 to 90 percent
  • Ideally on an east or west window with mild morning or evening sun
  • At the south window only behind a curtain, a curtain or similar shading

As beautiful as an orchid could be in the living room cupboard or wall shelf; under these reduced light conditions you look in vain for the magnificent flowers.

Lamps bring light to dark winter days

Winter is a difficult time for your orchids, as they are affected by the lack of light for months. By installing fluorescent tubes with the light color 865 daylight white above the plants, you compensate for the lack. Equipped with dovetail reflectors, the light output can be further increased so that even your young plants do not stop growing in winter.

These symptoms indicate wrong light

In summer, the sun can become the enemy of your orchids if it burns down unfiltered on the plants at midday. Unmistakable symptoms of sunburn are yellowish patches with a dark border that do not spread. By changing the location or providing some shading, the problem is quickly solved.

If orchids do not have enough light, they develop long, stunted horny shoots. Species that are particularly light-hungry stop growing completely or shed their flowers and leaves. If the plagued flowers move to a brighter place, they recover quickly.

tips

The distinctive pansy orchid (Miltonia) is very happy about the unfiltered sunlight and the fresh air on the balcony. If you are allowed to stay here from May to August/September in a bright to semi-shady place, the pretty flowers will appear twice a year.
