In order for orchids to thrive healthily and vigorously, they need a transparent culture vessel. How boring when it's a conventional plastic pot. The aristocratic flower diva looks much better in a glass bowl. Read here how to use an orchid professionally.

Orchids look particularly elegant in bowls

Special bowl shape for a long orchid life

In order for the queen of flowers to hold court in a bowl for many years, the right shape and a particularly structured base are important. So that enough light can reach the aerial roots, please choose a ship-like pot. Examples of suitable dimensions are:

  • Length: 37.5cm
  • Width: 13cm
  • Height: 14cm

A special water drainage floor ensures that no waterlogging can form. Without this complementary attribute, a 4-5 cm high expanded clay drainage (€19.73) is required, resulting in a height of up to 20 cm.

How to properly place an orchid in the bowl

2 small or 1 large orchid can be placed in a bowl with the stated dimensions. Fill in a layer of coarse orchid soil on the water drainage floor. Position the potted orchid on it so that the root neck is just below the edge of the bowl. While holding the plant with one hand, gradually fill in the remaining substrate.

At the end, all the root strands should be surrounded with pieces of pine bark. For a creative finishing touch, cover the substrate with a thin layer of sphagnum or other peat moss.

Which orchids are suitable for the bowl?

Not all orchid species feel in good hands in a bowl. Look out for orchids with strong, rich green leaves that droop gracefully. The butterfly orchid (Phalaenopsis), the grape orchid (Dendrobium phalaenopsis) and the easy-care Cambria orchid are particularly suitable.

tips

Would you like to use a traditional bowl to display your most beautiful orchid? Then simply leave the plant in the transparent culture pot. Place this in the middle of the bowl on a thin layer of decorative stones or expanded clay beads. To hide the boring plant pot from view, form a pretty wreath out of Euphorbia wood and dried thyme sprigs and place it around the culture pot.
