A poinsettia has its main flowering period in winter. During this time, it is grown in the room and creates a Christmas atmosphere with its colored bracts. In the summer, the plant takes a short break. How to oversummer poinsettias.

After the winter season, the poinsettia loses its red leaves

Summer poinsettia on the window sill

In principle, you can grow a poinsettia on the windowsill all year round if the location is favorable there. It should offer the following conditions:

  • warm
  • bright
  • protected from drafts
  • not too much direct midday sun

After flowering, however, only green leaves form. If you have enough space, you can summer the poinsettia a little cooler. During this time, water less than during the main flowering period.

Bring poinsettias outside in summer

The poinsettia likes it even better when you spend the summer outside on the balcony or terrace than on the window sill.

Place the pot in a place that is protected from drafts, where it is warm and bright. However, too much direct midday sun is not suitable.

Protect the poinsettia from heavy rain so that the substrate does not get too wet. If it is dry, only water it when the top layer of soil has dried out. Do not place the pot on a saucer. Then excess water can run off and you avoid that the plant is waterlogged.

Get back home in time

Poinsettias do not tolerate any frost. They prefer temperatures between 20 and 26 degrees. When it gets cooler outside again, you need to bring the plant back inside. At less than five degrees, the poinsettia dies.

No colored bracts without a dark phase

In order for the poinsettia to develop colored bracts again, it needs a longer phase with little light.

He should no longer get eleven maximum twelve hours of light per day. Keep it dark for six to eight weeks or cover the plant with a cardboard box or opaque bag every hour.

tips

Some hobby gardeners swear by planting the poinsettia in the bed in summer. All you have to do then is think about digging it up before it gets too chilly outside.
