As epiphytes, orchids are predestined for free-hanging cultivation. When the exotic floral beauties stage themselves in the window with casual elegance and seemingly weightlessness, they garner admiring glances. We would be happy to explain to you how to hang up orchids professionally.

The Vanda Orchid likes to hang

Hanging Vanda Orchids - How to do it right

A Vanda orchid prefers a life without soil in order to bring out its stunning floral display. Thus, it ranks at the top of the list of the most popular orchids for a free-floating attitude in the flower window. A small slatted basket, in which part of the aerial roots are inserted, provides the necessary support. How to hang the orchid professionally:

  • Attach hooks to the right and left of the wall or in the roller shutter box in a west or east window
  • Attach a milky film to the south window in summer to soften the blazing sunlight
  • Connect the hooks and the slatted basket with stainless wire

Please attach the wire in such a way that you can easily remove and re-hang the basket with the orchid when maintenance work is on the agenda.

A congenial partnership - hanging orchid and tillandsia

An orchid hanging bare-root in the window is constantly threatened with drying out. If a consistently high level of humidity and multiple sprayings a day cannot be guaranteed, you don't have to do without the spectacular staging in the flower window. By combining a floating vanda with a tillandsia, you solve the problem in a way that is as simple as it is decorative.

Tillandsia usneoides, also known as Spanish moss, is perfect for this purpose. Since the plant is also epiphytic, attach it to the root system of a Vanda orchid. The tillandsia is able to store a lot more moisture and is happy to let the orchid share in it.

tips

The substrate-free cultivation of an orchid requires increased care. The focus is primarily on high humidity of 60-80 percent, regular diving and daily spraying. By hanging the plants in an orchid display case with a simulated rainforest climate, you avoid the extra work.
