Healthy oleander is a real feast for the eyes, but without protective measures, the Mediterranean plant is constantly attacked by various pests. Spider mites in particular love the flowering shrub, but aphids are also often found on the inflorescences and new shoots - i.e. all soft parts of the plant. The following article will tell you how to identify and combat the small insect pests.

Oleander is often attacked by aphids

symptoms

Aphids are by no means the same as aphids, because there are a large number of different species. The sucking pests can be black, green or yellow, with the yellow variety mainly feasting on the oleander. But no matter which aphid it is, its colonization can cause serious damage to the oleander. The animals damage the plant less through their sucking behavior and more through their sticky excretions. These, also known as honeydew, attract ants and provide a welcome breeding ground for many fungi - especially the sooty mold fungus. But by the time you notice a striking number of ants in the immediate vicinity of your oleander and/or the leaves are suddenly covered with a blackish, sooty layer, the aphid population was able to multiply unhindered. So check the plant regularly and carefully for an infestation in order to be able to combat it as quickly as possible.

combat

Fortunately, aphids can usually be repelled effectively with simple home remedies, so you rarely have to resort to the poison bottle. An insecticide should only be used if the infestation is severe, and you should buy one that is specifically effective against aphids. Very often, however, it is sufficient to rinse the oleander under the shower with a strong jet of water. You should carry out this treatment several times; it is also very suitable as a preventive measure - after all, the oleander tolerates moisture very well. It is also effective both to combat the annoying insects and to prevent them from settling beneficial insects. Incidentally, you can also buy these little helpers in specialist shops and release them directly on the infested oleander. Such little creatures feel particularly comfortable in your garden (and then also ensure lasting order) if you offer them a nice home with an insect hotel (€11.33).

tips

Nettle manure, which is quite easy to make yourself, is also quite effective against aphids. The broth also acts as a plant-strengthening agent.
