- Protect from frost in winter
- Cypresses for unfavorable locations
The cypress is an evergreen conifer native to the Mediterranean and other warmer regions of the world. Cypresses can also be grown in the garden in Germany - if the conditions are right. What to consider when caring for cypresses in Germany.

Warm, sheltered location
Cypresses like it warm to semi-shade. Shady areas are not suitable. The location should be a little sheltered from the wind.
Good areas for planting real cypresses are the Rhineland and other regions where temperatures don't drop too much in winter and it doesn't rain that often.
Water and fertilize regularly
The biggest enemy of the cypress is drought. The root ball should never dry out completely. That's why you have to water cypresses even in winter on frost-free days.
In the spring you should provide the trees with compost or conifer fertilizer so that the cypresses can find enough nutrients.
Protect from frost in winter
- Cover the ground with mulch (239.00€).
- Protect trees with sackcloth
- water regularly
The only partially winter-hardy cypresses can also tolerate temperatures that fall to minus 10 - 15 degrees for a short time. If the frost periods last longer, you must ensure good winter protection.
Cover the soil with mulch blankets. In unprotected locations, you can protect the trees from frost with sacking or brushwood carpets. Bubble wrap is only suitable as winter protection for potted plants, as the cover has to be aired more often. Otherwise mold will form or the trees will rot.
Cypresses for unfavorable locations
You should really only plant real cypresses where you can ensure a good location and the right soil moisture.
If your garden is in an area where it often freezes or rains a lot, it is better to plant false cypresses or thuja. These varieties are more resilient and also cope better with the cold.
But you don't have to do without real cypresses on the terrace. Simply plant the conifers in tubs. This makes it easier for them to overwinter and protect them from severe frost.
tips
In recent years, the cypress trees in the Mediterranean region have also been suffering increasingly from the weather changes. Many trees there are threatened by fungal infestation because the weather is much too dry or too wet.
