If the cypress in the garden turns yellow or the hedge gets yellow needles, it is almost always a matter of maintenance errors. Cypress trees require more maintenance than other hedge plants. How to prevent yellowing of the needles.

If it is too dry, the leaves of the cypress turn yellow

Causes why a cypress tree turns yellow

Brown or yellow needles are always a sign of improper care of the cypress. A brown discoloration on the inside is a normal process that is usually hardly noticeable. Just shake off the needles. Sometimes it also makes sense to prune the cypress so that more light can get inside the tree.

It is different with yellow and brown needles at the tips. They indicate that something is missing from the tree. Causes can be:

  • not enough water
  • waterlogging
  • Soil too poor in nutrients
  • wrong fertilizer
  • frost damage

Never let cypresses dry out

Cypresses do not like waterlogging at all, but the root system must not dry out completely. You need to water a cypress regularly, preferably with rainwater. This is especially true for potted cypresses.

To avoid waterlogging, the soil must be well drained so that rainwater can drain off. You should definitely put a drainage layer in a bucket.

Fertilize cypress properly

It is often recommended to fertilize cypresses with blue grain. This is not recommended because blue grain is poisonous to animals and also promotes the yellowing of cypresses.

If the cypress gets yellow needles, you should fertilize it with Epsom salts. Dissolve the salt in water and pour it over the cypress. This gives the fast-growing tree sufficient nutrients.

Avoid frost damage

Cypresses are only conditionally hardy. They tolerate sub-zero temperatures at most for a short period of time. If the tree has had too much frost, the needles will also turn yellow.

Water shortages are even worse in winter. Cypresses also need regular watering during the cold season. Pour some warmed water on frost-free days.

tips

Cypress trees come in many different shades. The color palette ranges from juicy and light green to blue and yellow. The golden cypress forms yellow needles and is therefore particularly good as a single tree.
