Cypress trees are native to the Mediterranean and other areas that experience warm temperatures and lots of sun. The decorative conifers can also be grown in the garden in Germany if you pay attention to a few points.

Cypresses like it warm and sunny and are only partially hardy

Cypresses need a sunny spot in the garden

The location in the garden should be as sunny as possible and protected from the wind. Cypress trees do not thrive in the shade.

A cypress needs a lot of nutrients because it grows very quickly. The floor must therefore

being. The cypress does not tolerate waterlogging. In compacted soils it is advisable to ensure good drainage.

Create a cypress hedge as a privacy screen

Cypresses grow fast and dense. They can therefore be used very well as a privacy screen in the garden.

Leave a planting distance of 30 to 50 centimeters within the hedge. You need two to three plants for one meter of cypress hedge.

Hedges need to be trimmed at least once a year to keep them dense and not too tall.

Caring for cypresses in the garden properly

To properly care for a cypress tree in the garden, you need to water and fertilize it regularly.

Watering is always done when the soil surface has dried. Even in winter, a cypress needs to be watered. To do this, give slightly warmed water on frost-free days.

Rainwater is particularly suitable for watering.

Protect from severe frost in winter

Cypresses are only conditionally hardy. Depending on the species, they tolerate minus temperatures down to minus 15 degrees for a short time. Long periods of frost are very damaging to the trees.

If the cypress is in an unfavorable location, you must protect it from severe frost. To do this, lay a layer of mulch under the tree. Wrap the cypress in burlap or other suitable materials.

Young trees in particular are at risk from frost. Older cypresses can cope with extreme cold without additional measures.

tips

Cypresses tolerate pruning well and can be pruned all year round. However, the best time for pruning is before and after the growing season, which runs from April to August. However, diseased branches should always be trimmed immediately.
