Cypresses are considered to be quite easy-care, robust conifers. However, they require sufficient care for the trees to really thrive. A cypress does not forgive mistakes in care. What you need to consider if you want to properly care for your cypress.

How is the cypress watered?

Cypresses tolerate neither complete drought nor waterlogging. Water the trees regularly as soon as the plant substrate has dried up.

Drainage has proven its worth for cypresses in the garden. If you care for the cypress in the pot, you should also insert a drainage layer.

How often does it need to be fertilized?

Cypresses are very fast-growing and therefore need a lot of nutrients. Lay a good foundation by amending the soil with compost, horn shavings, animal manure, and Epsom salts before planting.

In the spring, you supply established plants with long-term fertilizer.

When caring for cypresses in tubs or as bonsai, add liquid fertilizer for conifers to the irrigation water every two to three weeks.

When and how are cypress trees pruned?

You don't have to cut individual trees. Hedges, on the other hand, are trimmed at least once a year. The best time for this is spring or from the end of August.

When cutting, remove as few fresh shoots as possible. Avoid cutting into the old wood, as the trees will bare in these places.

You should trim hedges twice a year at the beginning so that the trees grow strong and branch out well. In height, you shorten the hedge every year by about a third of the annual growth until the cypress hedge has reached the desired final height.

What diseases can occur?

If the cypress shows signs of illness, you must act immediately. This is especially true for fungal diseases, which can become so massive that the tree dies.

Affected shoots are immediately cut and disposed of. The use of a fungicide is often unavoidable to save the cypress.

You can recognize a pest infestation by dried tips and feeding passages. Cut off affected branches immediately.

Unfortunately, only tearing out the tree helps with bark beetles.

Why do the cypress trees turn yellow or brown?

If the cypress gets brown or yellow needles or if the branches dry up, either diseases or pests are responsible. Keep a close eye on the health of the cypress so that you can take immediate action if the cypress develops problems.

How are cypresses overwintered?

Cypresses are only conditionally hardy. In the garden, they should be protected from frost with burlap or other materials.

It is important that the cypress must also be watered in winter.
