The mussel cypress grows best and fastest in a sunny location that is somewhat sheltered. But this cypress species also gets along in half-shady places. Mussel cypresses only do not thrive in the shade.
The soil should be slightly acidic, able to store moisture well, but be loose and permeable to water. If the soil is compacted, you should create drainage before planting.
Shell cypresses in tubs get a sunny place on the terrace. They need to be watered more often. Normal garden soil is sufficient as a substrate.

Shell cypresses tolerate neither drought nor waterlogging. In order to keep the soil moisture constant, a mulch layer made of bark mulch around the tree has proven its worth.
