In a favorable location and with good care, Leyland cypresses are hardy and have little trouble dealing with pests and diseases. Diseases almost only occur when the Leyland cypress gets too little water or is waterlogged.

Which pests occur on Leyland cypresses?
- mealybugs
- bark beetle
- leaf miners
A pest infestation can happen at any time. As soon as you discover that the Leyland cypress has been infested with lice, beetles or moths, you should take immediate action.
Cut off badly affected shoots. On small trees, it is worth trying to wash off lice and moths.
If you spot bark beetles on Leyland Cypress, the only solution is to remove the entire tree. The beetles cannot be fought and spread to nearby trees.
What do brown spots indicate?
If the shoots of the Leyland cypress turn brown, it is almost always because the tree is too dry or too damp. Waterlogging, which the Leyland cypress does not tolerate at all, is particularly harmful. If the soil is heavy, be sure to drain before planting.
If brown spots appear after the winter, it is not a matter of frost damage, as is often assumed, but of dried-up branches.
Cut off the affected shoots and ensure that the cypress is sufficiently watered.
Fungal diseases when it is dry or too wet
If the Leyland cypress suffers from a lack of water, it becomes susceptible to fungal diseases such as:
- Seiridium Canker
- needle burn
- Phytophthora root rot
While Seiridium canker and needle smut are mainly favored by excessive drought, root rot is caused by waterlogging. Canker disease is indicated by discoloration of the leaves and formation of canker sores on the bark.
In the case of a severe infestation, there is often no choice but to remove the trees completely. If the diseases are not yet so severe, the use of a fungicide can help.
tips
The many filigree leaves of the Leyland cypress evaporate a lot of water - even in winter. On frost-free days you should therefore also water all cypresses during the winter. The root balls should never dry out completely.
